This talk will consider the rapidly changing open access (OA) landscape and its impact on academic research, with a particular focus on humanities scholarship. Dr Caroline Edwards is a Founder and Director of the Open Library of Humanities (OLH), which launched in September 2015 as a publishing platform for “gold” OA journals, with no author-facing charges. The OLH has been a pioneer in building an international consortium of library-supported funding – known as the Library Partnership Subsidy (LPS) – and other disciplinary fields are now looking towards this new model of funding gold OA publishing. With partners such as the Dutch linguistics network, Ling-OA, the OLH is demonstrating how subscription journals can be “flipped” to open access in a sustainable way. Dr Edwards will outline how the OLH has grown and what it can offer scholars in terms of bring together the best of traditional publishing and editorial practices with cutting-edge technological innovations in digital publishing and infrastructure.

Dr Caroline Edwards is Lecturer in Modern & Contemporary Literature at Birkbeck, University of London and Editorial Director of the Open Library of Humanities (OLH). As a Founder of the OLH, Caroline has given numerous talks on open access in Europe and North America, and currently oversees an OLH editorial network of over 50 scholars. She also edits the open-access journal of 21st-century literary criticism, Alluvium.
