CLOCKSS adds its 12th archive node at Humboldt University, Berlin

September 29, 2010, Stanford, CA. – CLOCKSS is very pleased to announce
that it has added a twelfth library to its network of worldwide
distributed archive nodes. The new node is hosted at Humboldt
University, in Berlin, Germany. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft
(DFG) has provided funding for the University to represent Germany in
this important international initiative.

Humboldt University joins the CLOCKSS board, and will work alongside
all participating publishers and libraries to decide on policies and
best practices for the archive. At Humboldt, both the Computer and
Media Service and the Berlin School for Library and Information
Science will provide the knowledge, community and technical support
necessary and look forward to be able to contribute to long-term
preservation of scholarly publications in a larger scale.

Michael Seadle, Director of the Berlin School of Library and
Information Sciences at Humboldt University, said „At
Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin, we regard CLOCKSS as a key component
of the infrastructure for preserving scholarly content for future
centuries and we are pleased to play a role in the CLOCKSS network on
behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany.“

The node at Humboldt University will store a complete version of the
CLOCKSS archive content and will use award-winning open-source LOCKSS
technology to automatically and continually check with the other
nodes, audit itself, and repair any differences. If content in the
archive becomes no longer available from any publisher („trigger“
event), CLOCKSS will release the content and make it available for
free to the entire world.

Gordon Tibbitts, Executive Director of CLOCKSS, said „We are grateful
to Humboldt University for taking on this important responsibility.
Joining forces with Humboldt University as our twelfth archive node is
a major step for the CLOCKSS effort to protect the world’s scholarship
and keep it in the hands of scholars.“

The twelve CLOCKSS archive nodes are hosted at:
Australian National University
Humboldt University
Indiana University
National Institute of Informatics, Japan
OCLC Online Computer Library Center
Rice University
Stanford University
Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore
University of Alberta
University of Edinburgh
University of Hong Kong
University of Virginia
