The Central European University (CEU) is an undergraduate and graduate-level “crossroads” university where faculty and students from more than 100 countries come to engage in interdisciplinary education, pursue advanced scholarship, and address some of society’s most vexing problems. CEU is now seeking an exceptional individual as the University’s next Library Director.

The Director of the CEU Library has strategic responsibility for all matters related to the Library; this includes the two sites in Vienna and in Budapest, as well as the planning of the new Library at the Otto Wagner Campus in Vienna. They must work collaboratively with the University’s senior leadership, students, faculty and staff to ensure that the CEU Library provides a modern and professional service to its international research community. They shall report directly to the designated Pro-Rector and will be expected to contribute to broader matters within the University.

Current priorities include leadership of multiple library sites and oversight of the future move of the CEU Library to the Otto Wagner Campus in Vienna by 2025. The incoming Director shall have the opportunity to influence and help design the new Library space. The Director must ensure that the Library continues to develop its online and digital services. They must enhance the Library’s Open Access strategy and develop a clear vision related to Open Data and Open Knowledge. They will act as a bridge across the University and will work with department chairs to ensure that the needs and ambitions of CEU’s faculty are being met. The Director will also support and empower Library staff through a period of change and readjustment. They will partner with other academic support units, especially Information Services, the CEU Press, Open Society Archives, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Center for Academic Writing, and external organisations via consortia and grants.

Ideal candidates will bring extensive leadership and operational management experience. They shall be an expert in scholarly communication, open access, and digital support services. They will have excellent understanding of developing digital library services and will be aware of the latest advancements in the sector. They will have experience of working in a research library and of working alongside senior academics. They will be used to working in highly international and diverse workplaces and will have superb relationship-building and interpersonal skills. They will be an excellent communicator and will be capable of motivating teams and individuals.

The Library is a critical part of CEU’s scholarly mission and culture; it provides a site for informal and formal collaboration across the university. This is an exceptional opportunity to shape the CEU Library and lead it into the next exciting phase of its history.
