Zusammenfassung: Der tertiäre Bildungsbereich in Österreich wird geprägt von 21 öffentlichen Universitäten, dem Institute of Science and Technology Austria in Klosterneuburg, der Universität für Weiterbildung Krems, 13 Privatuniversitäten und 19 Fachhochschulen. Deren Bibliotheken betreiben gemeinsam mit der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek die Literatur- und Informationsversorgung für Lehre, Forschung und Wissenschaft für die Universitäten und Hochschulen.
Die Bibliotheken kooperieren auf nationaler Ebene im Österreichischen Bibliothekenverbund und in der Kooperation E-Medien Österreich. Auf internationaler Ebene bestehen Kooperationen mit der Elektronischen Zeitschriftenbibliothek (EZB), mit dem Datenbankinformationssystem (DBIS), mit dem Dokumentenlieferdienst subito, mit dem Digitalisierungsnetzwerk E-books On Demand (EOD), mit der Österreichischen Bibliotheksstatistik (ÖBS) und dem Bibliotheksindex (BIX).
Eine optimale Literatur- und Informationsversorgung auf nationaler Ebene zu gewährleisten ist die große Herausforderung der österreichischen Bibliotheken für die Zukunft. Es fehlt derzeit allerdings ein Masterplan für die Hochschulbibliotheken. So stellt auch eine der deutschen Schwerpunktinitiative „Digitale Information“ vergleichbare
Initiative mit den Themenfeldern nationale Lizenzierung, nationale Hosting-Strategie, Forschungsprimärdaten, Open Access, rechtliche Rahmenbedingungen und virtuelle Forschungsumgebung ein Desiderat in Österreich dar.

Bruno Bauer: IS THERE A NEED FOR A PRIORITY INITIATIVE „DIGITAL INFORMATION“? STATUS QUO AND PROSPECTS FOR AUSTRIAN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

Abstract: In Austria, tertiary education is offered through 21 national universities, 19 universities of applied sciences, the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria), the Danube University Krems and 13 private universities. Their libraries and the Austrian National Library supply them with literature and information
systems for science, education and research.
On the national level, these libraries act jointly in the cooperations Austrian Library Network and the Austrian Academic Consortia. On an international level, these libraries cooperate with the Electronic Journals Library (EZB), the Database Information System (DBIS), subito, eBooks on Demand (EOD), the Austrian Library Statistics (ÖBS) and the Library Index BIX.
The best possible supply of literature and information systems will be a big challenge for libraries in tertiary education institutions for the future. Currently, an appropriate master plan is lacking for the Austrian libraries. An initiative similar to Germany’s priority initiative „Digital Information“ is needed to cover and to push ahead the subjects of national licences, Open Access, national hosting strategy, research data, virtual research environments and legal frameworks in Austria.
