About the CEU Library
The CEU Library (https://library.ceu.edu/) is a mid-sized research library with two physical locations – CEU Private University (Vienna) and Közép-európai Egyetem (Budapest). It plays a central role at CEU providing quality academic library services to students, faculty and staff. It’s a unique opportunity for the right individual to join our team and lead the library public service developments on our new Viennese campus.
The Library’s physical space includes a predominantly English-language print collection, technology-rich collaboration rooms for groupwork, large screen computers, printers, and scanners. We provide a wide range of electronic journals, e-books, databases, and support for open access to the CEU community. A new Media Hub will be available from September 2020 to support media and audio production activities including filmmaking and podcasting.
Position
The Head of Information and Instructional Services / Deputy Head, Vienna Campus, will report to the Director, CEU Library, and provide leadership for the CEU Library public service functions in support of CEU’s teaching, research and learning goals. The Head is responsible for overseeing all aspects of public service areas on the Vienna campus including information, reference and research services both in person and online, developing and conducting instruction and training programs, ensuring access and circulation functions meet user needs, and determining outreach services for the Vienna Campus. The Head will work collaboratively with other library staff to ensure that services are timely, user-focused, effective, and best practice. The Head will also liaise with academic departments, Deans, and academic support units, especially the Center for Academic Writing and the Center for Teaching and Learning, to incorporate information and research skills training across the curriculum at the right level.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Management and supervisory responsibility for all public service functions: information and reference (in person and virtual), circulation and access, instruction in information and digital literacy, and external and outreach services
- Collaborate with other members of the library leadership team as well as direct reports, to advance the mission, vision, and values of CEU and the CEU Library
- Develop and implement the unit’s goals and objectives to provide quality user services using appropriate metrics
- Participate in hiring staff, mentorship, evaluation, and ensuring staff receive appropriate training to effectively carry out service functions
- Provide expertise and leadership in the implementation of new instructional models and information literacy techniques
- Actively liaise with departmental teaching faculty and administrators to understand library needs, develop collegial partnerships, and promote library services
- Manage schedules for information service point and instruction and training sessions
- Serve in the capacity of Director in her/his absence.
Requirements
- Master of library and information science
- At least 5 years of experience in a supervisory, management and leadership role in an academic or research library
- A degree in a social science or humanities field is an advantage
- Demonstrated commitment to international education and diversity
- Experience in providing public services, such as information, reference and research services, instruction, and access services functions
- Demonstrated knowledge of information and digital literacy best practices and strategies within academic libraries
- Knowledge of information technology applications relevant to providing library services
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple ongoing projects
- Strong commitment and enthusiasm for quality service
- Independent, reliable, flexible, and resilient
- Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills for multiple audiences in English (German is an advantage)
- Experience with managing budgets and project management skills are advantages
- Familiarity with research libraries in Vienna is an advantage.
